**GIZANTH**
Gizanth is a small island situated within the tropical archipelago of Q'Shar, defined by its atmosphere of low-hanging clouds and warm, heavy air. The interior is a swirling expanse of marshland, home to dark tribes of psychic witches and secretive, void-worshipping sects. In contrast, the coastal fringes of the island host quieter, calmer fishing villages. These communities lead a life dictated by the migratory patterns of the local Black Whales, which are central to their survival. Culturally, Gizanth is a fleeting and macabre society, defined by a profound obsession with death and the thin, permeable edges of reality.
The witch cults of the interior are exclusively female, maintaining a lethal and absolute decree that any male who sets foot upon their ancient lands is to be killed on sight. These covens are believed to be a vestige of a long-forgotten culture, theorised by scholars to have existed in the Elder Days, the longest age of Gryth that followed the Divine War and the 'reshaping of the spheres', a period much further back than any recorded history or the rise of the current continental powers. The witches wield a unique form of psychic magic not found anywhere else on Gryth; it is an ancestral power that does not abide by the standard rules of magic found in other nations or schools of thought. Their abilities operate on a frequency that defies conventional counter-spells or arcane logic, tied to a version of reality that has otherwise vanished from the collective memory of the world.
The island’s interior is deeply divided between two competing, shadow-steeped societies. While the witches hold the ancient marshlands, they exist in a tense standoff with male-based societies that utilise death magic and beast subjugation. These disparate groups often clash over the island's dark ley lines and resources. The heart of these grim cultures is the main town of Doomwhisper, a central hub for cults and notorious groups of cannibal necromancers. In Doomwhisper, the line between life and death is nonexistent, and the consumption of flesh is often a ritualistic necessity for their particular brand of magic.
The island’s ecosystem is home to several strange and lethal species found nowhere else in Gryth. Death-head snakes the size of ancient trees prowl the marshes alongside colossal insects, while the deeper jungles support a small but remarkably ferocious population of dinosaurs. Historically, Gizanth was largely ignored by the wider powers of Q'Shar, avoiding the major wars and political upheavals of the continent. However, this peace ended recently when the Everreach trading company targeted the island for expansion. Upon realising that Gizanth’s true riches lay not in minerals, but in its unique stories, culture, and potent magic, Everreach shifted its tactics to one of subjugation and destruction, souring the coasts and destroying everything they could find. The mostly peaceful fishing villages on the islands thin exterior bore the brunt of these savage attacks, and as such as now basically non-existent.
This recent trauma has fundamentally altered the Gizanthi temperament, replacing their former reclusive nature with a searing, hot hatred for all outsiders. The population of the island is a diverse but unified collective of those comfortable in the shadows; here, humans living as powerful witches and warlocks dwell alongside Drow elves, Lizardfolk, and a significant number of Reborn corpses: individuals who have returned from the grave to continue their service to the island. They now stand as a hostile front against any foreign vessel that dares to approach their mist-shrouded shores.
