For millennia upon millennia, the dragonborn have existed here, with ancient records dating as far back as the First Age naming this territory "the land of dragons." It is an impossibly harsh and deadly landscape to any who are not of draconic origin. The land is acrid and acidic, where lava and smoke plumes belch toxic, thick smoke into the air. All life here has specialised over thousands of years to survive, and to enter without protection is certain death. The terrain is dominated by fields and beds of black sands, valleys of shifting dust and pyroclastic flows, and sharp obsidian glass. It has been millennia since the dragonborn were known at large, now being relegated to a few hundred individuals within the wider world who represent the sum total of all known about them. They retreated into total isolation after a deadly, consuming war overtook their lands known as the "Bleeding of the Scales." In this war, it is thought that almost 80% of their species were exterminated. Following this catastrophe, they formed a new society of such intense rigidity and strictness that it has become like an alien world to most. This decree closed the three grand gates of Pymandi: Gate Aryt, Gate Dezaan, and Gate Qumos. Besides these gates, the land is surrounded by the sharp, impassable mountains known as the Terror-Spines, which are haunted by drakes and shadow wyrms. Dragonborn society is ordered into unbendable castes that cannot be escaped, where the colour of one’s scales, signalling their draconic ancestry, places them within a specific social strata. They are thought to still be ruled over by a dragonborn who takes the title of Lord of Smoke, though the land remains unknowable due to the closing of the gates. These social systems are ingrained in every facet of their life, organised as follows: • The Pureborn: These are the highest caste members, born under the strict watch of the Pymanthian Lords and bred for their specific bloodlines. o The Blackblood: Onyx black with shining scales like liquid oil, these dragonborn are seen as the most beautiful. They are raised by The Golden as potential Lords of Smoke and fed the black lava of the Drakkenmount, which grants them great arcane powers and twists their minds with dark magic. They are enormous, towering over others, and undergo profane rituals to bolster their power, becoming sadistic and psychopathic by design. o The Golden: An all-female caste of sorceresses and priestesses with glittering gold scales. They provide the Blackbloods with children and live in the grand temple atop the Drakenmount. Any male children born of gold are sacrificed to the mountain. o Redscales: Red-scaled dragonborn raised as elite captains and royal guards. They are the most physically imposing, with hefty, muscular bodies and stout heads set upon broad shoulders. • The Prophets (Affu): This caste contains Silver and White dragonborn. They are the scholars, spellcasters, masters of divination, and religious leaders of Pymandi. They also serve as teachers, architects, and leaders of working groups. ![[Pasted image 20260203224755.png]] ![[Pasted image 20260203224806.png]] ![[Pasted image 20260203224814.png]] ![[Pasted image 20260203224820.png]] ![[Pasted image 20260203224828.png]] • The Canaris: The general workers, servants, and hard labourers. They enjoy no societal advantages and live in slums and deep dwellings at the foot of the mountain. Comprising the majority of the population and the fighting force, their colours are blue, green, brass, copper, and bronze. It is strictly forbidden for them to interact with higher castes except at a superior's whim, and their whelps are regularly taken to the Drakkenmount for experimentation. • The Ill-Bloods: The lowest caste, consisting of those who have become like animals through experimentation or cross-breeding with beasts. They may be part lizard or part goblin, living amongst the sulphurous plumes and lava beds in the Valley of the Dreadscale. They are hated and reviled, treated as vermin by the rest of dragonborn society. While dragonborn outcasts have occasionally travelled Gryth of their own accord, the society within Pymandi refused all contact until three years ago. At that time, an emissary was found at Gate Aryt with a chilling message for the world: the dragonborn would soon reveal themselves to the great stage of the world once more.
