Humans have inhabited the island of Tohon for at least 3,000 years, maintaining a quiet existence separate from the northern and western worlds for most of their history. While their own internal records are numerous, they remained an enigma to outsiders until their recent and aggressive expansion. Their culture is deeply rooted in the worship of elemental gods known as the Irashen, which are complex amalgamations of pagan nature spirits and more traditional pantheonic deities. This spiritual life is guided by the philosophy of "wind, stone, and tree," leading the Tohonese to build their ancient temples in perfect synergy with the natural landscape of mountains, forests, and coastlines. Roughly 300 years ago, Tohon shifted from a collection of isolated tribes into a unified, expansionist state. This unification spurred them to look beyond their own shores, leading to frequent and bloody conflicts with the pirates of the Bleeding Isles, who had raided Tohonese coastlines for millennia. To bolster their rising power, Tohon’s ever-expanding navy formed a strategic alliance with the global corporate entity Everreach. In the last century, Tohon has transitioned from a single island into the heart of a burgeoning empire that seeks to dominate the rest of Q'Shar and the lands beyond. They have turned against Everreach in the last decade, banning all trading companies from their shores, as they seek to expand their own influence without assistance. The empire is a formidable magical powerhouse, defined by strong sorcerer bloodlines that are meticulously cultivated through arranged marriages and magical experimentation. Their military strength is anchored by "fire lords" and "water shapers," as elemental magic is the most highly valued ability within their society. Tohon is also the exclusive home of a unique breed of dragons, known variously as rainbow, wish, or cloud dragons. These creatures are smaller than their northern counterparts and do not conform to standard scale-colour hierarchies, instead displaying a vibrant multitude of hues. These dragons serve as the national symbol of the Emperor. The current ruler, Emperor Twi'Kur, is a figure of immense controversy. To his own people, he is a renowned warrior elevated to near-godhood and believed to be blessed by all the Irashen. He famously keeps two rainbow dragons as both pets and wife-consorts. Conversely, in regions such as Fangrum and Lenasia, he is regarded as a "great evil" intent on total decimation and control. The beast races of Fangrum, in particular, harbour a deep-seated hatred for the Emperor and his people. The island’s geography supports a variety of rare species, including Loxodons found only in specific valleys and a great society of Aarakocra inhabiting the mountain peaks. Though filled with ancient riches and steeped in elemental tradition, the Tohon Empire is now a nation focused entirely on the future.
