For millennia upon millennia, the dragonborn have existed here, with ancient records dating as far back as the First Age naming this territory "the land of dragons." It is an impossibly harsh and deadly landscape to any who are not of draconic origin. The land is acrid and acidic, where lava and smoke plumes belch toxic, thick smoke into the air. All life here has specialised over thousands of years to survive, and to enter without protection is certain death. ## Geography The terrain is dominated by: - **Fields and beds of black sands** - **Valleys of shifting dust and pyroclastic flows** - **Sharp obsidian glass** - **The Drakkenmount** - a grand volcano where the Golden caste resides - **The Terror-Spines** - impassable mountains haunted by drakes and shadow wyrms ### The Three Gates The only known entrances to Pymandi: - **Gate Aryt** - where the recent emissary emerged - **Gate Dezaan** - **Gate Qumos** All three gates have been sealed since the Bleeding of the Scales. ## History ### The Bleeding of the Scales A devastating, consuming war that overtook dragonborn lands millennia ago. It is thought that almost **80% of the dragonborn species were exterminated** in this conflict. Following this catastrophe, they formed a new society of such intense rigidity and strictness that it has become like an alien world to most. The decree closed the three grand gates of Pymandi. ### Recent Development > [!warning] Recent Development > **Three years ago**, an emissary was found at Gate Aryt with a chilling message for the world: *the dragonborn would soon reveal themselves to the great stage of the world once more.* ## Caste System Dragonborn society is ordered into unbendable castes based on scale colour: ### The Pureborn (Highest) **The Blackblood** - Onyx black scales like liquid oil, considered most beautiful - Raised as potential Lords of Smoke - Fed black lava of the Drakkenmount (grants arcane powers, twists minds) - Enormous, towering over others - Undergo profane rituals becoming sadistic and psychopathic by design **The Golden** - All-female caste of sorceresses and priestesses - Glittering gold scales - Provide the Blackbloods with children - Reside in the grand temple atop the Drakkenmount - *Male children born of gold are sacrificed to the mountain* **Redscales** - Elite captains and royal guards - Most physically imposing with hefty, muscular bodies - Stout heads set upon broad shoulders ### The Prophets (Affu) - Silver and White dragonborn - Scholars, spellcasters, masters of divination - Religious leaders, teachers, architects - Leaders of working groups ### The Canaris - Blue, green, brass, copper, and bronze dragonborn - General workers, servants, hard labourers - No societal advantages - Live in slums at the foot of the mountain - Comprise majority of population and fighting force - Strictly forbidden to interact with higher castes except at superior's whim - **Whelps regularly taken to Drakkenmount for experimentation** ### The Ill-Bloods (Lowest) > [!danger] Caste Cruelty > Those who became like animals through experimentation or cross-breeding. May be part lizard or part goblin. They live amongst sulphurous plumes and lava beds in the Valley of the Dreadscale. Hated and reviled, treated as vermin. ## Connections - [[Continents/Continent - Edaria|Edaria]] - Parent continent - Dragonborn outcasts occasionally encountered throughout Gryth ## Story Significance The recent emissary's message suggests the dragonborn are preparing to re-enter world affairs after millennia of isolation. Their return could reshape the political landscape of Gryth.
